Botox® and Dysport® are two of the most popular neuromodulators available for non-invasive, cosmetic use. At Blush and Grey we offer both Botox® and Dysport® in order to make you look your best. In my 10 years of practice I’ve often encountered the common questions surrounding neurotoxin treatment. Here is some information to help you decide what’s right for you.
1. How does Botox® work?
Botox® interferes with the way the nerve and muscle communicate. The nerve will still receive messages from the brain, but will be unable to pass that message along to the muscle. Therefore, the muscle will not contract (move) and will stay in a relaxed state. If the muscle is relaxed the skin and soft tissue around the muscle will relax and soften as well. The cosmetic result is smoother appearing skin!
2. How long does Botox®/Dysport® work?
The average person will enjoy results from Botox® within 2 weeks of treatment. The wrinkle reduction effects will last approximately 12 to 16 weeks when tyou choose to be treated regularly.
3. What are the side effects?
Most people experience only very mild side effects from Botox®/Dysport® injections, including bruising, swelling, and discoloration. On occasion the eyebrows may become uneven or droopy. There are rare instances of headaches following injection with Botox®.
It is important to establish care with an experienced provider who can minimize the possibility of side effects and learn what consistently achieves optimal benefits for you.
4. Is Botox® safe?
Many medical studies have proven both the safety and efficacy of Botox®. For decades it has been safely used to treat not only aesthetic but also medical concerns. Neurotoxin effects are not permanent,so Botox®/Dysport® are considered safe for long term use. The doses given in aesthetic practice are minimal compared to those for medical treatment.
5. Why should I get Botox®?
Botox® will help soften fine lines and wrinkles and give your skin a softer, smoother, more youthful appearance. Botox is very effective at treating lines associated with facial expression such as the horizontal lines on the forehead, the vertical “11” lines in between the eyebrow, and crow’s feet.
Women in their 20s and 30s can also benefit from Botox®. It has been shown that those who begin treatment earlier will enjoy the preventative properties of muscle relaxation and may even limit the development of lines!
